The Commission, after having a conference with the parties on Monday, 31 March 2003, issued the following recommendation/statement:
Recommendation - Cobden Chadwick Printer
[1]
The parties are to consider their respective positions on how best to progress this issue.
[2]
The parties are to continue to look at the career structure as a means of addressing the issues relating to the Cobden Chadwick printer.
[3]
In looking at the career structure the parties should not rule out looking at other options that may identify themselves as the parties consider their respective positions.
[4]
There will be a report back to the Commission on
Tuesday, 15 April 2003 at 8.30 am
at the Box Hill site.
The Commission is satisfied with the progress that has already been made.
Statement - No 3 Paper Machine
[5]
The Commission has given serious consideration to this matter and believes there are a number of issues that the union must consider before progressing this issue.
[6]
Firstly, there are a number of serious hurdles the union must get over in regards to the application of the Work Value Principles that would apply in pursuing the issues relating to the No 3 Paper Machine.
[7]
Secondly, one of the consequences if the union were to pursue this matter under the stringent Work Value Principles and if the Commission did not accept that the claim met the work value criteria, would be the material relied on by the union could not be used again in any future wage claim.
[8]
The Commission would ask that the union consider their position and advise the Commission at the report back scheduled for Tuesday, 15 April 2003 at 8.30 am how they wish to deal with the No 3 Paper Machine matters.
